Richard didn’t go downtown to his studio that morning. He lurked around the house, not speaking, but carefully watching Shelby. Alexa unconsciously mimicked him, her pale eyes tracking Shelby as she moved across the den. When Shelby’s skin started to crawl, she went upstairs to get ready for therapy—which wasn’t for three hours.

That was a tactical mistake. As she walked into her dressing room Richard was right behind her. “Not now. Please,” she said, holding up a hand. “I don’t want Alexa to hear.”

“She can’t hear us.”

“She can if you raise your voice again. I’d rather not risk it.”

He sighed, closing his eyes for a moment. “She’s not a little girl anymore. This is our house. If being around us while we try to figure this out bothers her—she can go back to her apartment.”

“She doesn’t like being there since Brianna’s boyfriend moved in. Alexa shouldn’t have to share a one-bedroom with a couple.”

“It’s not about that and you know it. Our house is nicer than any apartment in the city. You act like a short-order cook, you do her laundry… I’d still be living at home if I had this kind of setup.”

“This will be her home as long as she wants to stay.” She slipped into an unstructured linen sundress, tiring of waiting for Richard to give her a moment’s privacy.

“I don’t want to argue about Alexa.” He moved so she’d have to look at him. “I want to talk about us.”

“I’ve got therapy soon. Can’t we talk when I get home?”

“Now. Your appointment isn’t for hours.”

Had he always been so focused on her schedule? Why would he even know when her appointment was?

“Fine.” She left the dressing room, heading for the bedroom. Taking a seat in a comfortable chair, she looked up at him. “So talk.”

“Why divorce? We’ve had a good life together. Can’t we keep going like we have been?”

“No, we can’t.” She pursed her lips, knowing this wasn’t going to go down easily. “I want more. I want things you can’t give me.”

“You want Jemma.” He’d been pacing in front of her, his nervous energy about to make her throttle him.

“Yes, I do. But she doesn’t want me.” That fact was ridiculously difficult to admit.

“Why not?”

What an odd question. He seemed offended, like Jemma’s rejection called his choices into question. “Because she’s over me.” She could have gone on, but he didn’t need to know more.

“So…you’ve been carrying a torch for…what? Our whole marriage?”

Her voice was almost a whisper. It sounded less cruel at lower volume. “Yes. Our whole marriage.”

He didn’t speak for a minute, his eyes scalding her.

“It’s awfully late to start, but I have to make my own life. It’s time.”

“What has this been?” He pointed, his finger going in a slow circle. “This isn’t a life?”

“You said it yourself last night. We’ve got twenty-five years of lies built up. I can’t go on like this. I’ve got to at least give myself a chance to find love.”

He stopped and effortlessly folded himself into a crossed-leg position, sitting at her feet.
